Why do memory cards break so fast?

SD and microSD memory cards have different standards (SDHC / XC / UC), but the statistics of requests show that they break for the same reason - the desire of the manufacturer to save.

By 2016, there was a transition to a new type of layout boards. For users, it turned out to be imperceptible in itself, but it greatly reduced the stability of the card to physical damage. The fact is that inside began to put a thin board with a thickness of 0.25 mm. Such a board just hangs inside the card case! Slightly squeezed or bent the card - and now contacts come off.

Fortunately, now such models are practically out of use, but they were replaced by cards with other problems. The board has now become even thinner and is attached directly to the microcircuit. Such an engineering sandwich.

Technical clarification: “Sandwich” became the SD-card format. Small microSD, which we put in smartphones and tablets, have always been done in this way. In another way you can not fit anything.

"Sandwich" partly solved the problem with mechanical damage: nothing else dangles. However, the cards have become almost non-repairable. More precisely, it is almost impossible to recover data from such a flash drive: you cannot accurately disassemble it; you will only be able to read the data with special (and expensive!) Equipment.

And if the problems of the “sandwich scheme” SD and microSD ended there, then careful use would allow them to serve for a long time. In particular, the recommendation of not removing the card from the device, but dumping files to a computer by cable or wirelessly, always worked well.

However, drive manufacturers leave the best memory chips for SSDs - solid-state drives, which have become somewhere a replacement, and somewhere competitors to “hard drives.” As a result, less reliable and cheap chips come to the memory cards, and sometimes even defective ones.

What should the consumer do? The question turns out to be rhetorical, since even top brands reduce the cost of production by any available means.

The following recommendations will partially help to extend the life of the card:

  • Remove the card from the device as rarely as possible.
  • It is better to turn off the device before excavation, even if it supports “hot swap”.
  • Avoid cheap cards of unknown manufacturers.
  • For professional photo and video shooting, as well as for shooting by action cameras, choose SDHC or SDXC cards with the abbreviation UHS on the label (stands for Ultra High Speed, ultra high recording speed). Today there are three UHS generations: I (2010), II (2011) and III (2017).

In general, we can note the sad fact: despite the observance of the rules of use, modern memory cards will only last long if you write down some information (music, for example) on them, insert them into your smartphone and no longer touch. In all other cases, the death of the drive can happen at any time.
